Benefits of Chocolate Skin Care

Ever heard of chocolate skin care. Sounds off beat doesn’t it? It is now a craze in skin beauty care industry. No doubt, the word chocolate means, in general parlance, bad skin- a cause for acne. Chocolate became synonymous for bad skin. Now it happens to be the solution to perfect skin care. How? Let us have a look.

Why Use Chocolate in Skin Care?

  • It has powerful anti-oxidant properties and is considered to be a health food.
  • Chocolate has skin softening properties, probably as it contains cocoa butter.
  • It is used to smoothed out wrinkles due to the anti-oxidant properties.
  • The anti-oxidant properties prevent the free radicals from causing damage to the skin’s elastin, other protein and collagen.
  • It has a nourishing effect on the skin.
  • One can exfoliate the dead skin cells and regenerate news ones.
  • Hydration of the skin is possible.
  • Eating foods that are rich in flavanoids, help to maintain collagen and fight against sun damage.
  • Chocolate is a good moisturizer.
  • It rejuvenates the skin.
Of course, much research still needs to be done on this front. But as of now the chocolate is much in use in beauty care for its skin softening ingredients. Next time you eat a chocolate, do think of its benefits as a skincare product. Try this beauty product for the perfect skin.
Beauty Benefits Of Chocolates Scrub: You can use chocolate powder with milk and yogurt to make a homemade scrub. It cleanses the skin, exfoliates and brightens it. Chocolate powder can either be melted before or while mixing with milk. Apply it on the wet face and neck. Scrub for 10 minutes in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions and then leave for 5 minutes. Rinse with cold water. Anti-ageing: We all do not wish to see the fine lines forming on the face. Chocolate benefits the skin as the beauty product fights ageing. Dark chocolates have flavonoid which increases skin elasticity and fights ageing. Melt chocolate in milk and then massage on the face twice or thrice a week to prevent the formation of fine lines. Glowing skin: Chocolate facial is very popular for this beauty benefit. The yummy chocolate helps bring fairness and improve skin complexion. You can mix cocoa powder with milk, honey and oatmeal. Apply it on the face and neck and leave for 15-20 minutes. Rinse with cold water to get fresh, clean and glowing skin in a few weeks. Detox skin: Cocoa powder when mixed with caffeine becomes the best beauty product to detox the skin. Massage the skin with this mix to get rid of oily and dull skin. Chocolate face packs like these opens the skin pores and removes dead skin cells. Sun tan: Sun damage is very common especially in this hot season. Protect the skin from harmful UV rays by applying chocolate. This beauty ingredient has flavonoids and antioxidants that softens the skin, prevents premature skin discolouration and sun tan.
  • Firms the skin - The caffeine present in chocolate stimulates the circulation and improves blood flow. This in turn improves and invigorates skin cells, decreases the aging process and increases firmness of the skin.
  • Rich in anti-oxidants - The darker the chocolate, the more powerful are the antioxidant properties. It is also important that you choose your creams and lotions carefully before you begin using them. Products that contain more than 35% of pure cocoa are more effective when it comes to revitalizing the skin and giving it a plumper and firmer feel. Antioxidants also help increase the level of collagen and elastin in the skin and thereby reduce the effects of aging. Fine lines and wrinkles can be treated with regular chocolate treatments as antioxidants lessen the damage caused by free radicals in the body.
  • As a moisturizing agent - Cocoa butter contains high amounts of natural oils and emollients necessary for treating dry, rough and flaky skin. A chocolate massage or chocolate body wrap using a cocoa-butter based massage cream will help remedy rough skin especially on those stubborn spots such as the elbows, knees and feet. The higher the percentage of cocoa butter in the lotion or cream, the better moisturized the skin stays long after the treatment is over.
  • Good for health - Studies have shown that eating a small bit of dark chocolate every day can improve your cardiovascular system, and help prevent atherosclerosis and chronic fatigue due to its antioxidant properties. Chocolate also has the power to improve a person’s mood and cause feelings of euphoria. Even the smell of chocolate can accomplish this positive effect on the brain; making chocolate massages an ideal way reap the health benefits of without any of the guilt associated with eating too much chocolate.
  • Good for cellulite - Chocolate contains theobromine that helps burn fat and get rid of cellulite. A chocolate massage or chocolate body wrap helps work the chocolate-based lotion or oil into the skin for the best results.
  • Calming effects - Who hasn’t calmed down after biting into a chunk of chocolate? In much the same way, a chocolate massage helps reduce stress and tension and eases tight and sore muscles.
You can also make your own chocolate massage lotion at home in a few simple steps:
  1. Mix together a quarter cup of cocoa powder with one cup of shea butter and a quarter cup of chamomile oil. You can use a blender for this to get a nice smooth consistency.
  2. Mix till the lotion is smooth and free of lumps. If you would like it thinner, add some more oil. If you prefer a thicker cream, add some more shea butter. Make sure that the shea butter is at room temperature for the best results.
  3. Pour this lotion into a jar with a tight lid and store in a cool dark place.
  4. Use to massage into the skin or as a moisturizer. It is gentle enough for everyday use.

The Benefits of Fish Oil For the Hair and Skin

Fish oil can help improve the quality of your hair and skin.
Photo Credit Fish oil vitamins image by Stephen VanHorn from Fotolia.com
Fish oil, commonly called "brain food," is used to treat a wide variety of medical conditions. It is well known for the benefits it provides to your heart and blood system; however, fish oil can also be used to for the treatment of certain skin conditions and for the protection and strengthening of your hair. If you're prone to acne, eczema, weak hair or hair loss, consult with your physician about the benefits of fish oil.

Acne Treatment

Incorporating fish oil into your diet may help you reduce acne-related skin problems. If your acne is caused by dry skin and you experience occasional flare-ups, consuming fish oil can help reduce the loss of moisture, which may help to clear up your skin. If you have a more serious acne condition, fish oil can help reduce inflammation of trouble spots on your skin. This can help your acne condition look better and clear up more quickly. Typically for the treatment of acne you'll want to incorporate more fish oil through your diet, however; you should consult your physician before making drastic dietary changes or starting a topical regimen.

Eczema Treatment

Two different uses of fish oil are common in the treatment of eczema: topical and oral. Depending on the type of eczema you have, your physician can better direct you in what is best for your condition. Fish oil can be effective in the treatment of eczema because it will help your skin retain moisture and hydrate spots of inflammation.

Skin Aging Prevention

Eicosapentaenoic acid is the main omega-3 fatty acid responsible for the prevention of skin aging. Like its role in acne treatment, fish oil can help keep your skin looking youthful. It keeps your skin hydrated, which helps ward off wrinkles. To deter skin aging, make fish oil part of your dietary habits. It should be consumed orally as a supplement or through diet alone.

Hair Growth

The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil can facilitate hair growth. Omega-3 fatty acids help nourish hair follicles. This results in both a faster, stronger growth of hair and also in the prevention of hair loss. You should not apply fish oil directly to your hair; rather, it should be incorporated through diet.

Hair Quality

Besides helping your hair growth, the use of fish oil can help maintain hair quality. The protein found in fish oil helps your hair stay strong, lustrous and durable. A lack of protein can result in brittle or weak hair. Fish oil consumption also helps your hair to look healthier by keeping it shiny and smooth.

Safety and Precautions

Before you begin taking a fish oil supplement or increasing the amount in your diet, talk to your physician. Although fish oil is thought to be safe if taken in low doses, it may be unsafe in higher doses. There is not sufficient evidence to firmly support the safety or unsafety of fish oil. Too much fish oil can potentially raise your cholesterol levels and weaken your immune system, according to the National Institutes of Health.

benefits carrots

cutcarrot
I use a hair lotion called ORS Carrot Oil and I have a face mask called Yes To Carrots Exfoliating and Soothing Mud Mask.  Until now, I have not really given it much thought that the main ingredient used in these products is a carrot.  Which means, that carrots should be very beneficial to hair and skin.  It stands to reason that if it is commercially prepared for hair and skin, the little orange vegetables that are available every year from the farmers market are in fact extremely good for the body both internally and externally.
What is so beneficial about this orange veggie that it can be used topically?  Well, internally, carrots contain beta-carotene which is converted to vitamin A by the body.  This nutrient wards off cancers, helps prevent heart disease and helps you to see better.   As for your hair and skin, carrots are very useful externally to revitalize dull and tired looking skin and hair, will leave your skin and hair looking youthful and fresh and it helps to prevent hair loss.
So what can you do at home to incorporate carrots into your hair regimen? You can drink the juice of a carrot every day!  Recent research results from Harvard University suggest that people who eat more than five carrots a week are much less likely to suffer a stroke than those who eat only one carrot a month. Besides this study, anecdotal evidence suggests that people who drink carrot juice and other vegetable juices daily can avoid hair issues such hair loss, baldness, hair dryness and oiliness, hair breaking and shedding.
The following are three ways to use carrots at home topically. This way, you can get the direct goodness of your organic carrots topically without buying expensive commercial products:
Carrots For Hair
The following recipe provides multiple benefits for hair care and growth. Using carrots and honey increases hair sheen, reduces dry scalp, minimizes hair loss and preserves natural elasticity.
Ingredients:
2 Carrots
2 Tbsp Honey
1 Tbsp Olive Oil
1 tsp Vitamin E Oil
Directions:
Juice your carrots in a juicer. If you don’t own a juicer, blend the carrots in as little water as possible.   Strain the carrots.   Warm up the honey olive oil and vitamin e oil in a saucepan.   Add this mixture to the carrot juice.   Apply mixture to damp hair, coating it completely from root to ends.   Cover with a plastic cap and leave in your hair for at least an hour or as long as you have the time (overnight will yield great results.)   Wash the mixture from the hair, preferably with a sulfate free shampoo and then rinse well.   Style as usual.
carrot-face-mask
Carrot For Skin
This recipe is especially useful for areas of the body that are especially dry including elbows and knees.
Carrot and Avocado Moisturizing Mask
Ingredients
1-Tablespoon Brown Sugar
1/2 Avocado
1 Medium Sized Carrot
2 Tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Method: First, grate your carrot preferably on the smallest part of your grater. Remove the skin of your avocado and mash until it is very soft.   Next, mix together the carrot avocado, olive oil and brown sugar.   Stir until all the pieces are thoroughly mix, leave for 20 minutes to ensure all the ingredients are soaked in and mixed well together.
Prepare the area of the body where you will be putting the mask by washing first, preferably with warm water.   Scoop the mixture out and rub it in a circular motion – the sugar will wipe away dead skin and the other ingredients will moisturize.   Let the mask set (20 -30 minutes) and rinse away with warm water.   Finish with cold water.   If done consistently on the elbows and knees, the skin will soften over time.

Pamper your skin and hair with castor oil

6 Uses for Castor OilWhen it comes to skin care, castor oil most likely doesn’t come to mind. It’s more commonly thought of as a natural remedy for constipation, but this ancient oil can do much more.Castor oil has been found to have antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties that can help treat a variety of skin conditions and add moisture and elasticity to your skin.

Using castor oil can be a wonderful way to naturally hydrate your skin and hair in place of traditional beauty products that contain additives like parabens and other harmful ingredients.
Where does castor oil come from?
Castor oil comes from the castor seed plant native to India, the southeastern Mediterranean Basin and Europe. It’s also widespread in many tropical regions. The castor oil plant has glossy leaves that can be between five and 18 inches long and bears fruit, containing large, oval, shiny bean-like seeds. The seeds contain between 40 to 60 percent oil. It’s this unique composition that gives castor oil its many beneficial properties.
Castor oil is a triglyceride made up of fatty acids with up to 90 percent of them being ricinoleic acid. This acid is what gives castor oil its laxative properties. It’s also what has made castor oil an anecdotal remedy for helping to induce labor. This use has been documented in history, but we don’t recommend castor oil for that purpose.
The prepared form of castor oil has many medicinal uses, but raw, the plant is poisonous with the most toxic part being the seeds. They contain the potent toxin ricin, made from the protein in castor seeds. If ingested, this toxin gets into the ribosomes of your cells and ultimately kills them. Ricin is made from the leftover part of the seeds after processing them into oil. Eating just five to 10 raw castor seeds would be fatal, and once poisoned there is no antidote, according to Dr. Mercola.
For these reasons, it’s best to purchase an already processed, high-grade castor oil. Look for one that hasn’t been sprayed with pesticides or chemically processed which compromises the oil’s natural beneficial phytonutrients.
History
Centuries ago the castor seed plant was referred to as “Palma Christe”  because the leaves were thought to resemble the Palm of Christ. This association may have also come from the plant being known for its healing powers.
Castor oil was adapted for medicinal use in Ancient Egypt. It has been found in Egyptian tombs dating back to 4000 B.C. where the slow burning oil was used to fuel lamps. It’s also believed that Cleopatra used castor oil to brighten the whites of her eyes. Egyptian medical documents dated from around 1552 B.C. describe castor oil being used as a laxative.
Greek historian Herodotus described using castor seed oil as a fuel for lighting and for body ointments and to improve hair growth and texture. Throughout history castor oil has also been used for various purposes in China, Persia, Africa and later 17th Century Europe and the Americas.
Skin care
Castor oil is very thick, making it a good sealant to lock in moisture and to smooth severely dry skin and calluses. After a shower, apply castor oil for soft skin and all-day moisture. It may feel slightly oily at first, but this will be absorbed and dissipate in a short time. A few drops of it can also be added to your favorite lotion, shampoo or conditioner for added moisture.
Castor oil can also be used as a topical remedy for skin tags, moles, skin irritations, minor cuts and to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
To make a moisturizing dry skin treatment livestrong.com recommends combining ½ cup castor oil, 2/3 cup olive oil and 20 drops of your favorite essential oil. For an added bonus, use essential oils with nourishing properties like lavender, rosemary or jasmine. Smooth the moisturizing mixture on as needed for subtle skin with a revitalizing scent.
It’s important to note that castor oil, like any skin care product, may cause an allergic reaction. It’s recommended that you perform a test on a small patch of skin before incorporating it into your everyday routine.
Hair Care
As mentioned earlier, castor oil can also be used on hair. It can be massaged into your scalp and may help increase circulation, stimulate hair growth and prevent hair loss. Its antifungal and antibacterial properties can help treat scalp conditions including dandruff, scalp infection and scalp inflammation, all of which can be sources of hair loss, according to livestrong.com.
Castor oil is easily absorbed into the hair shaft and can help lock in moisture and eliminate dryness and breakage. Rub a few drops on your palms and smooth on to your hair for added shine and to tame frizz and dry split ends. It can also be used as a leave-in conditioner.
Next time you’re thinking about ways to naturally moisturize your skin and hair, you may want to give castor oil a try. Do you have any suggestions for uses? Feel free to let us know with a comment below.
Skin health.  Castor oil has a low molecular weight, which means it is absorbed readily into skin and hair, providing nourishment and moisturizing effects. When applied to the ends of dry hair, it moisturizes and prevents split ends.  It has been used for years as a face cream to reduce the risk of dark under-eye circles and to aid in the prevention and treatment of wrinkles.  Castor oil is commonly added to natural lip balms and glosses to add shine and moisture to dry lips and it’s also frequently added to natural mascaras to encourage lash growth.
Antimicrobial.  Ricinoleic acid contains antimicrobial properties, which, when applied to open wounds, can act as a disinfectant.  It is effective for treating fungal skin infections, such as ringworm, as well as minor cuts and scratches. An added bonus to using castor oil as a first aid treatment are its anti-itch and pain-relieving properties, which help ease symptoms as minor skin infections heal.
Decreasing stagnation.  Because of its low molecular weight, when applied to the skin, castor oil has the ability to not only penetrate the skin, but to reach the deeper organs of the body.  According to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian healing art, castor oil has the ability to warm the body, which can decrease the stagnation of excess bodily fluids and lymph. This stagnation can cause blockages in the body's tissues, leading to water retention and weight gain. In Ayurvedic medicine, it is common to apply a mixture of castor oil and powdered turmeric to masses and lumps found under the skin in order to dissolve them.  It is an excellent oil to use in full-body self-massage for people of Kapha constitution, whose bodies typically accumulate fluids...

Psoriasis, Avocado Oil and Fish Oil – A Topical Treatment

Treating Psoriasis with Avocado Oil Psoriasis is a non-contagious, recurring skin disease with symptoms that include patches of rough, dry and scaly skin surrounded by a red, inflamed border. Areas affected often become cracked and painful with severe itching. Psoriasis can occur in various places on the body and over 6 million people in the USA are believed to be sufferers.

Avocado Oil and Psoriasis

Serious cases of psoriasis should be treated by a healthcare professional who has a thorough understanding of the problem as there may be a variety of underlying causes. While avocado oil may not be a cure, many people report a lessening of the symptoms with regular topical application of avocado oil.
Avocado oil is considered one of the most skin penetrative of all natural oils and is extremely good at clearing up dry skin. Although psoriasis is obviously a far more serious problem than dry skin, the deep and long lasting moisturizing properties of avocado oil can help reduce symptoms like rough and cracked skin and lessen the irritating itching.
It would also be beneficial for psoriasis sufferers to switch from potentially inflammatory polyunsaturated cooking oils like safflower, soy, cottonseed and corn oils to monounsaturated avocado oil for cooking. You can also use avocado oil as a salad dressing, on steamed vegetables, in any recipe that calls for a rich culinary oil and even as a supplement by taking a teaspoon twice a day with meals.

Psoriasis, Fish Oil and Omega-3s

The type of fats we consume in our diet are suspected of either contributing to or lessening psoriasis symptoms. There are many reports of positive results for psoriasis sufferers who increase their intake of omega-3 fatty acids compared to the far more common omega-6. The best source of omega-3s is fish oil, or for vegetarians, a good flaxseed oil.
The omega-3 fat eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) found in fish oil has been shown to inhibit the metabolism of omega-6 arachidonic acid into pro-inflammatory eicosanoids. It is these inflammatory compounds that are believed to be primarily responsible for changes in the skin leading to psoriasis.
Often suggested dosages for combined EPA and DHA (which may also play a role) for treating psoriasis is 1 to 3 grams daily. That’s not of fish oil itself, but of the combined EPA/DHA that will be listed on the product. It is necessary to discuss this with your doctor if you are taking important medicine that may be affected by high doses of fish oil.
The fish oil dosage is usually best spread out over the day. At least morning and evening, but ideally divided into three doses taken with each major meal of the day. This helps to keep its anti-inflammatory effect working for longer.

Avocado Oil and Fish Oil as a Topical Psoriasis Treatment

Avocado Oil for Psoriasis While supplementing with both avocado oil and particularly fish oil can have a beneficial effect on psoriasis symptoms, both these oils have also been reported effective as topical treatments.
Avocado oil, with its strong moisturizing properties that penetrate deep into the skin, has been shown to be effective for many skin conditions such as acne and eczema as well as psoriasis. Fish oil, applied directly to the skin, has also been shown to be an effective treatment in research studies such as this one entitled: Topical fish oil in psoriasis – a controlled and blind study.
Given the effectiveness of both avocado oil and fish oil independently, I recently suggested trying both of these oils together topically to a friend with psoriasis on her arms and legs. As I told her and I’ll repeat here, it is very important to patch test this or any new psoriasis treatment for unfavorable reactions on a small, inconspicuous area a day before using it on larger areas.
This topical treatment has apparently proved very effective in reducing her symptoms, particularly decreasing itchiness, as well as improving the appearance of affected areas. It took around a week of application, nightly before bed, for her to notice significant improvement, so I would not expect results overnight.
The method is simple and I’ll share it here, but obviously one person is not much of a sample size. I’d be interested to hear anyone else’s results, but once again stress the importance of patch testing a small area the day before applying fully to check for any negative reactions.
To use avocado oil and fish oil as a topical treatment for psoriasis, start by pouring equal amounts of each oil into two bowls that you can reach quickly. With very clean fingers, start by applying avocado oil first, in gentle circular motions, followed immediately by fish oil over the same area.
Work one area at a time, with both the avocado oil followed by the fish oil, before moving onto the next. Larger psoriasis patches may be best done in sections as the idea is to blend the penetrative avocado oil with the omega-3 rich fish oil on the skin.
Be sure to use cold pressed avocado oil for the highest antioxidant content and a concentrated fish oil (perhaps with a touch of added lemon oil for a fresher smell) to ensure a high EPA/DHA content.
After applying the oils wait at least ten minutes before contact with clothing. Alternatively, lightly pat away any excess oil with a damp cloth after a few minutes. Remember to be gentle at all times when treating psoriasis. Rough treatment is usually counterproductive and can increase symptoms. I hope this works as effectively for many other people as it has for my friend.

Other Psoriasis Treatments

Psoriasis is a complex disease with a variety of possible contributing factors. Topical treatments can help reduce the symptoms, but to stop it returning you need to address what’s causing the inflammation at a deeper level than just the visible manifestation on the skin.
The Psoriasis Free for Life website has a specific and detailed plan to cure the condition that doesn’t involve prescription medicines or chemical laden lotions. The program focuses on long term dietary solutions and also includes other effective topical treatments for relieving psoriasis symptoms, like itchiness and scaly skin, while at the same time dealing with the underlying causes.

Green Tea Beauty Secrets and Benefits

Green tea has gotten a lot of attention in recent years, and not just for its amazing health benefits while consumed as a drink.  Cosmetic companies have capitalized on green tea’s potent anti-oxidant qualities and started adding it to their products for face and body.  But what is it exactly that makes green tea a staple for your beauty drawer?

Beauty in a green tea cup

Clinical research has shown that green tea leaves contain high amounts of anti-oxidants, which fight free radicals (harmful particles in the body that contribute to aging and diseases). These anti-oxidants work to fight free radicals when applied to the skin in the same way as when they are digested. But if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on expensive lotions and potions containing green tea extract, you can easily make your own beauty essentials right in the kitchen. Here are some simple green tea home beauty remedies:
Strengthening hair rinse – protect your hair from pollution, harsh products, and make it strong and shiny by rinsing with a green tea solution.  To make the rinse, simply steep 3-4 green tea bags in 1 L of boiling water for about an hour, let it cool down and thoroughly rinse your hair with it in the shower after you’ve shampooed and conditioned it.
Soothing eye compress – reduce puffiness and dark circles under your eyes by placing two used, cooled green tea bags over your closed eyes while lying down for 10 minutes. Alternatively you can brew 2-3 tea bags in a cup of boiling water, refrigerate for a few hours and use cotton balls soaked in the concentrate over the eyes the same way. The anti-oxidant content of green tea leaves works to prevent fine wrinkles and lines around the eyes.
Exfoliating body scrub – use dry ground green tea leaves mixed with honey to remove dirt and impurities from your pores. The slightly abrasive texture of dry green tea leaves and honey act as a great exfoliant to scrub off dead skin cells and pollutants, leaving your skin soft and smooth. Green tea leaves also have great anti-inflammatory properties and help reduce blemishes and scars.  Use it either for your face or your body.  Rub a small amount of the mixture in circular motion (avoiding the eye area) with your fingertips, leave on your skin for 10-15 minutes, and rinse off with water.
Refreshing face toner – make the same type of solution as for the hair rinse, soak a cotton ball with it and dab it all over the face as a toner first thing in the morning and at bedtime. Or use it in a spray bottle as a spritzer to invigorate and refresh your skin. Green tea’s antiseptic properties can help with cuts, scrapes and acne.
Detoxifying facemask – green tea leaves also help preserve your skin by reducing damage caused by the sun. Make a skin-reviving facemask out of green tea and yogurt (3 tblsp full fat yogurt + 1 tblsp ground green tea leaves). Apply on the face for 20 minutes then rinse well with water. This mask will help reduce sunspots and even out the skin tone.

Drink yourself skinny

Green tea can help you lose weight! It’s no wonder why supermodels and celebrities use green tea in their diets to stay in shape. Green tea boosts metabolism when consumed in high quantities daily. It also flushes toxins out of the body and has diuretic properties to reduce water retention. When I was getting ready for the Miss Universe contest, my nutritionist advised me to drink a cup of strong green tea after every meal to help my digestive system burn more fat, and flush out excess water to help my belly look flatter. I’ll drink to that!

Breath of fresh air

If you are concerned with your breath, green tea can also help you stay fresh. Swishing your mouth with high concentration of green tea will help prevent odor-causing bacteria from building up on your teeth and freshen up your mouth. You can also make your own toothpaste, using high concentration of green tea liquid and a teaspoon of baking soda. All natural and healthy toothpaste!

The Benefits of Yoga

The Benefits of Yoga

you_yoga.JPG
Developed in India thousands of years ago, yoga has become an increasingly popular form of exercise in the United States. Whether yoga’s recent rise in popularity stems from an increase in stress levels or the following of a Hollywood trend, yoga delivers many benefits to those who incorporate it into their everyday lives.
“Yoga is a healing system of theory and practice. The purpose of yoga is to create strength, awareness, and harmony in both the mind and body,” explains Dr. Natalie Nevins, DO, medical director of Amrit Davaa Wellness Center in Hollywood, California and a certified Kundalini Yoga Instructor. “As an osteopathic physician, I focus a lot of my efforts on preventive medicine and practices, and in the body’s ability to heal itself. Yoga is a great tool for staying healthy because it is based on similar principles.”
While there are more than one hundred different types, or schools, of yoga, most sessions are typically comprised of breathing exercises, meditation, and assuming postures (sometimes called asana or poses) that stretch and flex various muscle groups. Regular daily practice of all three parts of this structure of yoga produce a clear, bright mind and a strong, capable body.
“A person who practices yoga on a regular basis will experience physical, mental, and spiritual benefits,” says Dr. Nevins. “The relaxation techniques incorporated in yoga can lessen chronic pain, such as lower back pain, arthritis, headaches, and carpal tunnel syndrome,” explains Dr. Nevins. “Yoga can also lower blood pressure and reduce insomnia.”
According to Dr. Nevins, other physical benefits include:
  • Increased flexibility
  • Increased muscle strength and tone
  • Improved respiration, energy and vitality
  • The maintenance of a balanced metabolism
  • Weight reduction
  • Cardio and circulatory health
  • Improved athletic performance
  • Protection from injury
Aside from the array of physical benefits, one of the best benefits of yoga is how it helps a person manage stress, which has been known to have devastating effects on the body and mind. “Stress can reveal itself in many ways, including back or neck pain, sleeping problems, headaches, drug abuse, and an inability to concentrate,” says Dr. Nevins. “Yoga can be very effective in developing coping skills and reaching a more positive outlook on life.”
Unlike more traditional forms of exercise, yoga’s incorporation of meditation and breathing help a person improve his/her mental and spiritual well-being. “Regular yoga practice creates mental clarity and calmness; increases body awareness; relieves chronic stress patterns; relaxes the mind; centers attention; and sharpens concentration,” says Dr. Nevins. Body and self awareness, in particular, are very beneficial, adds Dr. Nevins, “because it can help with early detection of physical problems or ailments and allow for early preventive action.”
Because there are so many different kinds of yoga practices, it is possible for anyone to start. “Whether you’re a couch potato or a professional athlete, size and fitness levels do not matter because there are modifications for every yoga pose and beginner classes in every style,” says Dr. Nevins. “The idea is to explore your limits, not strive for some pretzel-like perfection.”
Most community fitness programs or local gyms offer a variety of yoga classes, with a range of skill levels. You can also find yoga studio listings in the yellow pages. If classes don’t appeal to you, there are many yoga DVDs, TV programs or books to help guide you through a routine. For more information about different methods of yoga and how to select the one for you, visit the American Yoga Association Web site.
Yoga can be practiced to enhance overall health, to improve balance, to heal and prevent injuries, to strengthen muscles and to open the body for meditation. “It is a great way to get in tune with your body and your inner self,” says Dr. Nevins. Yoga's increasing popularity is proof that many people value an exercise system that engages the mind, body and spirit in equal measure. If you've never done yoga before, give it a try and see what it can do for you.
Preventive medicine is just one aspect of care osteopathic physicians (DOs) provide. Osteopathic physicians are fully licensed to prescribe medicine and practice in all specialty areas including surgery. DOs are trained to consider the health of the whole person and use their hands to help diagnose and treat their patients.
